Dr. Sabih Abdulaziz Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, headed the State of Kuwait’s delegation participating in the 31st meeting of the GCC Electricity and Water Cooperation Committee at the ministerial level. The meeting was held on Monday, October 5, 2026, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The Kuwaiti delegation included Dr. Adel Mohammed Al-Zamil, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy; Eng. Maha Yousef Al-Hajri, Director of the Water Facilities Department; and relevant Ministry officials.
The meeting discussed a number of items on the agenda within the framework of strengthening joint GCC cooperation and integration in the electricity and water sectors. Key topics included the latest developments in the GCC electricity interconnection system, ways to further develop it and maximize its benefits, as well as follow-up on the work of the GCC Interconnection Authority. These efforts aim to enhance the reliability and stability of electricity systems and strengthen coordination and integration among GCC member states.
The meeting also reviewed the work of a number of joint GCC committees concerned with water resources, the rationalization of electricity and water consumption, customer services, and new and renewable energy. It also followed up on joint programs, initiatives, and events, while promoting the exchange of expertise and experience among member states in relevant fields.
In the water sector, the meeting discussed the latest developments in water interconnection among GCC countries, including studying the possibility of establishing water interconnection projects among member states and following up on developments in bilateral water interconnection projects. These efforts aim to strengthen GCC coordination and integration in the water sector, support joint efforts to enhance water security, and improve preparedness to address future challenges.
The meeting also reviewed a number of upcoming GCC initiatives and programs in the electricity and water sectors, including the Unified GCC Forum for Electricity and Water Regulators in 2027, as well as GCC participation in relevant regional and international conferences and events. It also followed up on the implementation of a number of GCC Supreme Council decisions related to strengthening cooperation among member states.
Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem affirmed that GCC integration in the electricity and water sectors represents a strategic pillar for enhancing energy and water security and strengthening the preparedness of GCC countries to keep pace with future changes and needs. He noted that the next phase requires building on the cooperation achieved and moving forward toward more integrated and sustainable joint projects and initiatives.
Al-Mukhaizeem said: “The unity of destiny and complementarity of interests shared by the GCC countries provide us with a solid foundation for advancing cooperation in the electricity and water sectors to broader horizons and transforming common challenges into opportunities for development and enhanced preparedness.”
“We believe that developing the electricity interconnection system and continuing to study water interconnection projects represent a strategic investment in the security and sustainability of our resources and a pillar for a safer, more stable, and prosperous future for the GCC countries and their peoples,” he added.
Kuwait’s participation in the meeting reaffirms its commitment to supporting the GCC joint action process and strengthening coordination and integration with GCC countries in the electricity and water sectors, thereby contributing to the development of shared systems and infrastructure and addressing future challenges efficiently and sustainably.
