Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Dr. Subaih Abdulaziz Al-Mukhaizeem stated that Kuwait’s power system concluded the Summer 2026 season with a maximum electrical load of 17,540 MW, a decrease of 70 MW compared with Summer 2025, when the maximum load reached 17,610 MW.

This marks the second consecutive year in which peak electricity demand has declined. In Summer 2025, peak demand decreased for the first time compared with 2024, when it reached 17,640 MW. This reflects a positive trend in consumption efficiency despite continued urban, population, and economic growth and the addition of new electrical loads to the grid.

The Minister explained that the additional electrical loads resulting from supplying electricity to new facilities amounted to:

- 1,059 MW during the period from Summer 2024 to Summer 2025.

- 1,019 MW from Summer 2025 to Summer 2026.

- Bringing the total to 2,078 MW from Summer 2024 through Summer 2026.

Despite these additions, peak electricity demand in Summer 2026 remained below the levels recorded in Summers 2024 and 2025. This demonstrates the impact of efforts to improve energy-use efficiency and consumption patterns, particularly during peak-demand periods.

Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem stressed that the measures taken to manage electrical loads during the summer season contributed directly to reducing pressure on the national power grid, particularly during peak periods. These measures included reducing working hours at government entities by one hour, suspending factory operations during peak hours, implementing the national electricity and water conservation campaign “Wafer,” and carrying out media and awareness initiatives to promote a culture of conservation and reduced consumption.

He praised the cooperation of citizens, residents, government and private entities, and the media, which contributed to supporting electricity-load management. He affirmed that these measures effectively reduced electricity demand during peak hours, supported continuity of service, and enhanced the grid’s ability to meet the country’s needs during periods of high consumption.

Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem noted that the Summer 2026 season took place under exceptionally challenging conditions due to the difficult regional developments affecting the country and the region, as well as the Iranian attacks that affected parts of the power system, causing damage to electrical facilities, fuel tanks, and overhead lines. This resulted in a number of generation units and system components being taken out of service and affected some production and operational capacities.

He explained that the repercussions also extended to scheduled preventive and periodic maintenance programs, as some work could not be carried out according to the planned schedules. Maintenance work on several units was consequently affected and was completed gradually through the end of August.

Despite these unusual operational circumstances, the resulting technical damage, units being taken out of service, and the impact on maintenance programs, the Ministry’s teams and technical personnel continued working around the clock to repair the damage, restore the affected units and facilities to service, and maintain the readiness of the power system. This enabled the Ministry to maintain continuity of service and meet the country’s needs throughout the summer season.

On the public-awareness front, Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem praised the important role of the national electricity and water conservation campaign “Wafer” in supporting the stability of Kuwait’s electricity and water systems during Summer 2026. He stated that the campaign directly contributed to maintaining continuity of service through the public’s response to conservation messages and the reduction of unnecessary consumption during peak hours, which helped ease pressure on the power grid during the most challenging periods.

He added that the campaign expanded its community outreach during 2026 through partnerships with government and private entities and through programs, lectures, activities, and awareness messages targeting various segments of society. These efforts promoted a culture of responsible electricity and water use and reinforced the concept of shared responsibility for conserving the country’s resources.

Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem stressed that the results achieved during Summer 2026 confirm that conserving consumption is no longer merely an awareness initiative, but has become a key element complementing the State’s plans to enhance the security and sustainability of the electricity and water systems. He added that sustaining these results requires integrated efforts among government institutions, the private sector, and members of the public, as well as the adoption of responsible consumption practices throughout the year.

He further affirmed that the Ministry is continuing to implement its strategic projects aimed at increasing electricity and water production capacity, developing transmission and distribution networks, and expanding renewable-energy projects in line with the country’s future needs and continued urban, population, and economic growth.

He noted that many of these strategic projects are currently in their final stages, creating a favorable environment for partnerships between the public and private sectors and paving the way for their implementation.

In concluding his statement, the Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy expressed his deep appreciation to the national personnel and all Ministry employees working across various sites, power stations, monitoring and control centers, and emergency services, commending their exceptional efforts and the dedication and responsibility they demonstrated under the extraordinary operational circumstances experienced by the country.

He also thanked citizens, residents, state institutions, and the private sector for their cooperation and response to conservation messages. He emphasized that preserving the country’s resources and ensuring their sustainability is a shared national responsibility, and that every contribution plays an important role in enhancing the efficient use of resources and supporting their sustainability for future generations.
