The State of Kuwait, represented by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, Dr. Adel Mohd Al-Zamil, along with His Excellency the Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to the Kingdom of Belgium and the head of its missions to the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Mr. Nawaf Al-Anzi, participated in the tenth annual conference on energy efficiency, organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which was held from June 11 to June 13, 2025, in the Belgian capital, Brussels, with high-level representatives from governments, international organizations, and energy experts in attendance.
In a speech delivered at the opening of the conference, the Undersecretary emphasized Kuwait's firm commitment to achieving sustainable development and enhancing energy efficiency in its efforts to combat climate change, indicating that Kuwait was one of the first countries in the region to adopt the Energy Efficiency Law in 1983, which underwent continuous updates over four decades and contributed to reducing more than 30 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Dr. Adel Al-Zamil announced the launch of a new simplified version of the Energy Efficiency Law, aimed at expanding the scope of its application in various sectors, in preparation for the release of a more sophisticated version that relies on the latest technology to improve energy efficiency at the national level.
He also discussed the role of the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy in leading the National Energy Strategy through its presidency of the High Energy Committee, which includes representatives from both the government and private sectors, and works through three specialized technical working groups in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainability, and energy security, with the aim of developing quality initiatives that support Kuwait's goals in the fields of energy and climate.
Within the framework of strengthening regional cooperation, His Excellency the Undersecretary announced Kuwait's hosting of the "Gulf Forum to Rationalize Electricity and Water" in November 2025, which will launch the "Energy Efficiency Excellence Award for Buildings "at the level of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, to honor innovation and leadership in the design and operation of high-efficiency buildings. He also pointed to Kuwait's participation in the Gulf- European Energy and Renewable Energy Security Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Brussels in late 2025.
He concluded his speech by emphasizing Kuwait’s deep commitment to cooperating with regional and international partners to accelerate the transformation in the energy sector, enhance flexibility, and guarantee a sustainable and safe future for future generations.
